Quick answer

  • Fly to Sorong (SOQ). Everyone reaches Raja Ampat through Sorong, because big planes do not land in Raja Ampat itself.
  • From Sorong, take the public fast ferry to Waisai, about 2 hours. Resorts and homestays can also arrange pickups, and a private speedboat is the faster, pricier option.
  • Foreign visitors pay about IDR 1.7 million in entry fees (roughly $100). It is IDR 700,000 for the marine park plus a IDR 1,000,000 regency charge that was raised in January 2026.
  • Bring cash. ATMs are limited and many places do not take cards.

Raja Ampat is one of the hardest places in Indonesia to reach and one of the easiest to fall for. It sits off the far western tip of Papua, so the trip takes a flight, a ferry and some planning. This guide walks through each step and what it costs.

How to get to Sorong

Sorong (airport code SOQ) is the only practical gateway. Direct flights are limited, so most travelers connect through Jakarta, Makassar or Bali. Routes and schedules change often, so check the airlines before you book. For help choosing airlines and airports, see our Indonesian airports guide.

  • Book 1 to 2 months ahead. Fares to Sorong can run $500 or more depending on where you start and the season.
  • Avoid tight connections. A late flight can make you miss the ferry, which means a long wait or an expensive speedboat.
  • If you land late, plan a night in Sorong and take the ferry the next morning.

From Sorong to Waisai by ferry

Waisai is the main town and port of Raja Ampat. The public fast ferry runs from Sorong to Waisai in about 2 hours when the sea is calm. Operators have listed morning and early afternoon departures, but the timetable has changed before, so confirm it with your host.

  • Economy and VIP seats. VIP has air-conditioning and a toilet. Fares reported by travelers and operators run from about IDR 100,000 to IDR 250,000 depending on class.
  • Harbour transfer. A taxi to the Sorong harbour is roughly IDR 100,000.
  • Pay in cash. Cash is the most reliable payment at both harbours.
  • Private speedboat. It takes you straight to your resort or homestay and costs far more than the ferry. Ask your accommodation about shared transfers first.

Raja Ampat entry fees

Everyone who visits pays for entry. The numbers below are the ones most recent reports agree on, but the local government updates them, so confirm on arrival.

  • Marine park charge. IDR 700,000 per foreign visitor, which is the amount the official marine park page still lists.
  • Regency charge. IDR 1,000,000 per foreign visitor, raised from IDR 300,000 and reported in January 2026.
  • Total for foreigners. About IDR 1.7 million. Indonesian visitors pay less.
  • Children. Under 12 are reported as exempt.

Pay in cash at Waisai and keep the receipts. Your host can tell you whether anything needs to be registered online before you travel.

What a Raja Ampat trip costs

Costs depend mostly on how you travel. Homestays are the budget route, while resorts and liveaboards cost much more. The table shows ballparks from 2025 and 2026 budget guides and operators, so treat the numbers as rough and check current prices.

Item Ballpark (USD) Note
Entry fees About $100 Total for foreigners
Ferry $8 to $16 One way, by class
Homestay with meals $30 to $95 Per person, per day
One dive $37 to $45 Gear about $5 a day
Island boat trip $30 to $250 Per boat, split it
Liveaboard $116 to $500 Per day, by level

Boat captains usually charge per boat, not per person, so joining other travelers lowers your share. Diving and boat days will be your biggest costs. If you want comfort, our guide to resorts covers the upper end.

Best time to go

Diving is usually best from October to April, when seas are generally calmer. May to September tends to be windier and wetter, which can make boat days rougher. Read our diving highlights guide to plan what to see underwater, and if you are curious about local culture, take a look at Sasi.

Practical tips

  • Cash. Bring enough rupiah for fees, ferry and homestay costs. ATMs are limited.
  • Connection. Signal is patchy outside Waisai. See our Wi-Fi and phone tips before you go.
  • Insurance. Remote islands make medical help slow and costly, so read our note on travel insurance, or compare policies with Visitors Coverage.
  • Entry rules. Raja Ampat follows the same rules as the rest of Indonesia. Check our visa guide before you fly.
  • Ask early. Homestays and resorts know the ferry timetable and can arrange pickups, so message them before you book flights.
